Can you rent a timeshare for only a week?

Posted on February 4, 2010.

So I am thinking of going to Hawaii this summer and i was thinking that instead of staying at hotel fr a whole week, could i just rent a timeshare for a whole week and divide the cost with friends? If not how does a timeshare exactly work?

You normally buy into a group, which allows you to use the condo for one (or two) weeks a every year (depending on how much you paid). so, basically the initial answer is NO, you cant rent it for a week, one year.
However, you can find someone who will give up their week so you can use it. Obviously, you’d have to pay them. I think Ive seen them on EBay and other sites. Or the time share group (if you know one) could also maybe put you in touch with someone.
Good luck…and get a sweet tan in Hawaii!

Pinnacle Vacations is a site that buys and sells timeshares. They might be able to help put you in touch with someone….maybe.

Sure. There is a fee for longer than a 3 day visit, but if the accommodations are there they will rent it to you. Income is usually $70,000 per year to do a time share. If you are married both partners must attend the presentation. But you can do this without any real issue

Yes you can, that’s one of the “benefits” of a timeshare ownership. Any timeshare owner would be very happy to rent their unit and it would work exactly the same as if you rented their vacation home, by doing this you will save a lot compared to resort rates (you can also go trough them to rent a timeshare unit).
This is a good place to find timeshare rentals by owner:

You can definitely just rent a timeshare for a week, and you might even get a deal that’s less than the yearly maintenance fees that an owner would pay. While on this subject, do NOT buy a timeshare for exactly this reason…there is so much timeshare inventory out there and the contracts obligate owners to pay maintenance fees and special assessments.

To get back to renting, it’s a little tricky because you want to make sure that you rent a nice place and don’t get taken. You can Google “timeshare rental” and pick out one of the top spots. See how they’d rent. Be aggressive in getting the best deal possible as they are there to get. You can also try craigslist or ebay but you need to scrutinize what you are going to get more carefully.
