Salthill was at one time a old fashioned seaside resort.

Just a few minutes from Galway City, Salthill was at one time a traditional seaside fishing village and resort. Now, however, Salthill has grown into a very important suburb of Galway City. Today, it is one of the foremost resorts in Ireland, and attracts tourists year-round.

The tiny fishing village charm may have gone by the wayside, but Salthill has gained some immense appeal in other areas. One of the favorite attractions for visitors is the 2km long promenade, which locally is known quite simply as, The Prom. This is a great place to jog or rollerblade, and of course, it is perfect for strolling. On a clear day, you can even see County Clare across Galway Bay. The Prom has numerous bars, pubs, restaurants and hotels. In fact, Salthill itself is bursting with amenities for holiday makers, including some very fine eating establishments, hotels and holiday homes and cottages.

Staying in a Holiday Home Salthill property is without question the best way to experience this amazing town.

While Galway Bay seems to remain the greatest attraction, Salthill does offer a wide variety of attractions for tourists. There are things like horse riding, golfing, tennis, and greyhound racing. In addition, you will find beautiful beaches, swimming, sunbathing, sail boarding, fishing, and snorkelling. Of course, there are more formal attractions, as well. One of those is the Galway Atlantaquaria. This is Ireland’s National Aquarium, and one it is extremely proud of, as it is home to over 170 different species of fresh water fish, as well as marine life. It can be found on the Salthill Promenade, and is unquestionably one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ireland.

The popularity of Ireland Self Catering and the standard of accommodation available will ensure you have great memories of your stay in this great country.

The Salthill Air Show was, at one time, a tremendously big tourist attraction, drawing in over 100,000 spectators. In fact, it was one of the largest Air Shows in Europe, and held every year along the Salthill Prominade, on the shores of Galway Bay. However, all that came to an end in 2007 when the door of an RAF helicopter fell into the crowd. The emotional impact of this tragedy, and the increased costs, along with protesting anti-war activists, caused the show to end in November of 2007.

There is a nice video guide of Salthill on youtube.

Certainly, while visiting Salthill, you will want to include a trip to the Galway Cathedral in your itinerary. The Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St. Nicholas is a Roman Catholic cathedral, and it is set in Galway. It is one of the biggest, and certainly one of the finest buildings in the city. The dome itself sits at a height of over 145 feet, making it a very popular and easily discernable landmark on the city’s skyline.
